ORIGIN. This breed has been deduced about hundred years ago in district York by crossing of ancient breed of working terriers with otterhounds. The breed name occurs from the river Air name.
The BREED DESCRIPTION. The basic colour an airdale - brown with the big black or black-grey stains. The wool rigid, not passing a moisture, requires a periodic hairstyle. The height nearby 59 sm. Weight - about 20 kg. Eyes not big, dark, live. Ears V-shaped, slightly raised. The tail is partially stopped, lifted upwards. CHARACTER. Earlier the airdale was used for hunting for wolves and bears and consequently did not possess especially gentle disposition. However careful long-term breeding work has made these dogs the present gentlemen. Now it is patient, cheerful and pleasant dogs, but it is necessary for them, that them loved and respected.
USE. Unlike small terriers, airdales are not capable to get into holes of small game, however they can hunt on an otter in boggy territories, and also on a wild wild boar. During war of these dogs used for delivery of messages through a front line and as guard, they submitted an alarm signal, attacked the opponent and certainly exterminated rodents. Besides, these dogs served in police and were used for bodyguard. However presently they serve only as dogs-partners.
